Murter is the largest settlement on the island of the same name, located on the northwest side of the Murter-Kornati municipality. There are 10 nautical miles away from one of the most beautiful national parks in Croatia, Kornati islands. The Murter settlement has more than 2000 inhabitants, while Kornati has 27 inhabitants. The locals of Murter are the owners of almost all Kornati islands and neighboring islands.

The beginnings of tourism on Murter date back to the 1930s, when a Czech villa was constructed in Slanica Bay. Since then the island has welcomed numerous guests from around the world. The majority of the island is covered with ancient olive trees and figs, grown by locals which is still done today.

During the summer you can attend concerts of classical and popular music in Murter, and the local church singing is quite special. A major cultural event is the regatta of traditional ships, held under the name Latinsko idro (Latin sail) every year at the end of September, on the feast day of St. Michael, the patron saint of the town.

If you enjoy diving, you are sure to love the mysteries of the deep and shallow waters surrounding Murter. Visit the protected underwater archaeological site Colentum or go for a diving excursion around Kornati islands. The beaches offer plenty activities for all ages: jet-ski, scooter, bike and pedalo rental, as well as an inflatable water park with trampolines. Tennis enthusiasts can enjoy clay terrains in the vicinity of Slanica beach, while cyclists can take full advantage of three cycling trails. Jogging and hiking can be a real pleasure on one of the many trails offering spectacular viewpoints.
